Description
Nos 28 to 32 on Westgate are mid-19th century buildings constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a hipped slate roof and rising four storeys. The façade is distinguished by a deeply moulded cornice with modillions and raised quoins. The buildings present five ranges of sash windows, with a rounded corner facing Railway Street.
Nos 28 and 30 boast impressive contemporary shopfronts characterized by horizontally rusticated piers and round-arched windows adorned with moulded voussoirs and keystones, separated by fluted columns topped with Tower of the Winds capitals. At the west end, there is a 12-panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight. No 32 has similar columns, although its upper section is obscured by a modern fascia.
The first-floor windows are framed by moulded surrounds, pulvinated friezes, and cornices. The second-floor windows are linked to the first-floor ones by fluted consoles and feature moulded surrounds with triangular pediments on consoles. The third-floor windows have shouldered moulded surrounds.
On the corner, the first-floor window is tripartite, with square Tuscan columns as mullions, a gadrooned keystone, and an entablature. The second-floor window is connected to it by fluted consoles and has a moulded surround with an entablature, while the central light features a further moulded surround with a keystone and a broken segmental pediment. The third-floor window has a shouldered moulded surround, festoons at the sides, and a moulded sill.
