Description
The Central Methodist Church is a chapel built in 1839, featuring recent internal alterations. It is constructed of ashlar stone with rustication on the ground floor and a rock-faced plinth, while the sides are made of hammer-dressed stone. The building has two storeys and a string course, with a five-bay facade. The upper floor is framed by wide flat Tuscan pilasters, and there is a frieze, a moulded eaves cornice, and a blocking course, which is raised in the center and displays the word "WESLEYAN" in raised capitals.
The first floor has five round-arched windows with marginal glazing, while the outer ground floor windows are similar, featuring aprons. The central ground floor window is made of stained glass and includes a memorial apron for the First World War. There are symmetrically placed double panelled doors with a semi-circular fanlight above, accessed by a small flight of stone steps. A central tablet on the facade reads "CENTENARY CHAPEL." The side elevations have six bays, with first floor windows matching those on the front and square-headed ground floor windows, all with marginal glazing. To the left, there are an additional two bays with a hipped roof.
Inside, the church was originally designed to seat 1,100 people. It features an elliptical gallery supported by slender cast iron columns, which is currently not in use, and the ceiling has been lowered to this level. The original pews remain in the gallery, while later 19th-century box pews are found downstairs. The organ has been removed.
