21 Wellington Road

This is a small textile warehouse, likely built around 1860, and altered in the 20th century. It is situated within the Dewsbury Town Centre Conservation Area and forms part of a block of similar warehouses. The building faces west and is surrounded on three sides: at the north by 19 Wellington Road, at the south by 23 and 25 Wellington Road, and at the east (for the lower two storeys) by 5 Wellington Street.

The exterior is constructed of buff sandstone in thin, regular courses, with dressed ashlar plat bands marking each floor and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The narrow, two-bay frontage is in a Classical style. The main entrance has a basket-arched surround with paired original panelled doors. Ground-floor windows to the left are arched with moulded, keystone surrounds and capitals, containing replacement timber casements. First-floor windows (paired to the left and a single window above the entrance) have moulded sills and consoled flat hoods, with replacement upvc casements. The upper floor has two windows with stone sills and segmental soldier heads, featuring original multi-pane timber sash windows with horns. The rear wall, visible above 5 Wellington Street, mirrors the front elevation in design and materials, with single-pane sash windows. The roof is flat and felted.

Inside, the vestibule retains panelled cornicing, marble steps, and an Art Nouveau etched-glass timber screen with a round window above. The original staircase remains, with cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail. Some original cornicing and decorative joinery are present, partially obscured by suspended ceilings. On the first floor, an original marble fireplace retains an inserted Art Nouveau tiled surround.
