Description
The Black Bull Public House is a public house dating from the late 18th century, which incorporates elements from a building of the 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with quoins and features a recent pantiled roof adorned with carved kneelers. The building has two storeys.
The left end has a central blocked doorway with a slightly arched lintel, flanked by three-light windows on both floors that have recessed mullions. To the right, there is a similar arched doorway with altered windows on either side and later windows on the first floor.
At the rear, there are two 2-light double chamfered windows with the mullion removed, and a central projection above a former doorway with a chamfered light. There is also a recent single-storey extension.
On the first floor, the former courtroom is preserved, still featuring the panelled magistrates' box and prisoners' box, both with painted panels and a canopy supported by turned colonnettes.
