Description
The tomb of Ellen Nussey, located 20 metres northwest of Birstall Parish Church, is a chest tomb dating from 1826. It is constructed from ashlar and is raised on two steps. The tomb has a rectangular shape, featuring a single panel at each end and two panels on each of the side facades. The top of the tomb is inscribed with the names of John Nussey, who died on 14th July 1826, his son George, who died on 7th October 1812, and his daughter Sarah Walker, who died on 16th June 1843. It also commemorates his youngest daughter, Ellen Nussey, a friend of Charlotte Brontë, who passed away on 26th November 1897 at the age of 80. This tomb is recognized for its historic significance.
