Description

Salem Methodist Church, now a Pakistani Madrassa, was built in 1863 and is constructed of ashlar. The building features two tall storeys plus a basement and has a five-bay front, with the central three bays slightly projecting under a pediment. The lower set-back side bays each have a flight of steps leading to a panelled double door with a cambered head, terminating in a square pier. The main facade includes square-headed basement windows and round-arched ground and first floor windows, both with archivolts. The first floor windows are adorned with foliage enrichment on the archivolt and a pointed hood mould, and they also feature a balustrade. A very deep dentilled cornice runs along the top. The tympanum is richly decorated with scrolled foliage and includes a central roundel inscribed with 'SALEM 1863' in raised capitals. The pediment has acroteria at the edges of the apex, and the flanking bays have a balustraded parapet and urns. The sides of the building have six bays, which are only partly visible, featuring archivolted round-arched windows. The rear elevation has four bays, with the central two breaking forward and topped with a pediment.

Inside, the church has been mainly altered, but an elliptical raking gallery remains, supported by slender, plain cast-iron columns. A few pine box pews are still present in the gallery.
