Description

A late 17th or early 18th century house, later used for Nonconformist worship in the mid-18th century, and converted into four cottages in the mid-19th century. The house is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a five-cell front, with the first cell possibly added in the mid-18th century, built in thin coursed hammer-dressed stone with quoined angles. The original doorway to the third cell has a segmental arched lintel, jambs with tie-stones, one of which bears the date 1719, and a chamfered surround. A similar doorway to the fifth cell has a straight lintel. All other cells have inserted 19th-century doorways. The windows are mostly double chamfered mullioned, lacking one or more mullions. The first cell has a two-light window, which has been lowered to a doorway, with a similar window above. The second cell has a single-light window with a three-light window above. The third cell has a four-light window with a three-light window above. The fourth cell has two two-light windows to the first floor and a four-light flat-faced mullioned window to the ground floor. The fifth cell has a three-light window and a doorway with tie-stones to the first floor. Coped gables with kneelers are present. The right-hand return wall features a tall, double chamfered mullioned and transomed stepped window of two over four lights, which gave onto a former meeting room. The rear of the building retains chamfered mullioned windows of two and three lights to the ground floor and three flat-faced mullioned windows of four lights to the first floor. There are three stacks on the ridge.
