Description

A row of nine cottages built in the early 19th century, situated at Knowl Top, near Colden. The cottages are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They are generally single-cell in design, with two storeys facing the road and three storeys to the rear. Each cottage features a doorway with a tie-stone jamb to the left of a three-light, flat-faced mullioned window with a slightly projecting sill. Above this, on the first floor, is a four-light window, except for number 7, which has a five-light window. The left-hand return wall has quoins and a gable stack, with nine additional stacks along the ridge. The rear of the cottages has similar window arrangements, with most cottages featuring five-light windows on each of the three floors, although some mullions have been removed. The fenestration facing the road remains intact, and the row serves as a good example of 19th-century industrial housing.
