HALIFAX WAINSTALLS Lumb Mill at NGR SE 047 289

Cotton spinning watermill, converted to worsted spinning, now workshop. 1803, converted c1833. Coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and stone slate roof. Steeply sloping site, 3 storey to north and 2 storey to rear. North front has 6 windows, plus additional window to right lighting added wheel housing. Ground floor has 5 windows in flush ashlar surrounds one converted to a door, to right single storey covered tailrace. Above 6 glazing bar windows in flush ashalr surrounds and to right a 2-light casement window in similar surround. Above again 5 glazing bar windows and another narrow window to left. West gable wall has small access door to ground floor and a loft window in the gable. South front has 5 lower windows flanked by pentrough and loft access. Top floor has four 2-light casement windows with flush ashlar mullions and to right double plank loft doors. INTERIOR has 3 storey wheelhouse to west containing very rare cast iron overshot suspension wheel, 36 feet in diameter. Remainder of mill has wooden floors supported on central row of cast iron columns on ground and first floor. This small textile mill contains a very rare and unusual cast iron waterwheel.
