Description

Lumb Mill is a cotton spinning watermill built in 1803 and converted to worsted spinning around 1833. It now functions as a workshop. The structure is made of coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The site is steeply sloping, resulting in a three-storey elevation to the north and two storeys at the rear.

The north front has six windows, with an additional window on the right that lights an added wheel housing. The ground floor features five windows in flush ashlar surrounds, one of which has been converted into a door, and to the right, there is a single-storey covered tailrace. Above, there are six glazing bar windows in flush ashlar surrounds, and to the right, a two-light casement window in a similar surround. The upper level has five glazing bar windows and another narrow window to the left.

The west gable wall includes a small access door to the ground floor and a loft window in the gable. The south front has five lower windows flanked by a pentrough and loft access. The top floor features four two-light casement windows with flush ashlar mullions and double plank loft doors on the right.

Inside, there is a three-storey wheelhouse to the west that contains a very rare cast iron overshot suspension wheel, measuring 36 feet in diameter. The rest of the mill has wooden floors supported by a central row of cast iron columns on the ground and first floors. This small textile mill is notable for its very rare and unusual cast iron waterwheel.
