Description
Mixenden Congregational Chapel is an early site dating back to the late 17th century. The first chapel was built in 1717, enlarged in 1810, and rebuilt in its present form in 1836. It is a two-storey structure made of gritstone "brick" with simple ashlar trim. The gabled pediment features a stone slate roof, and the three-bay front originally had two doorways flanking a central window. This was later altered to a central doorway with a cornice on consoles and flanking windows, while the first-floor squared jamb windows were likely lengthened at the same time. The four-bay side has plain squared surround windows. There is a small annexe on the southeast side that includes a sundial and an oval window. The interior was repaired in 1890 and features a gallery on cast iron columns on three sides, along with an organ loft recess.
