Description

The building is a former bank, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is now a public house and shop. The structure is constructed in stone with slate roofs.

The building is three storeys high plus an attic storey, situated on a corner plot. The main entrance is on the canted corner. The south-east front features three bays, with three very wide bays to the left return (south-west), extending beyond to two further bays that include a carriage entrance and a separate shop. The corner entrance is topped by a segmental pediment displaying a coat of arms, and has an eared architrave. The ground floor windows have segmental arches with keystones; those on the first floor feature cast iron columns and decorative stonework above. The second floor is lower, with more widely spaced windows, topped by an ornamental parapet with blind arcading and gabled lucarne windows. The carriage entrance also has a segmental arch, with two windows to the first floor and a single window to the second. The shop to the left has a glazed shop front with windows and a matching parapet above. Throughout the exterior, there is small-scale ornamentation, including pilasters, rustication to the ground floor stonework, and finials alongside the attic windows.

The interior of the building was not inspected.

The building dates to the mid to late 19th century and was formerly Barclay’s Bank. It was listed in 1973 and had been converted into a public house at the time of inspection.

The property is designated at Grade II as it demonstrates the eclectic style of mid-Victorian commercial buildings, reflecting the wealth and importance of Halifax at the time. It retains its original outward appearance with minimal alteration, and contributes to the group value of an island group of buildings of a similar date and style.
