Description

Higher Stoodley Cottage is a house dating to 1744. It is constructed of random rubble stone, dressed with hammer-faced stone, and has a stone slate roof. Originally a single-storey building, it was raised to two storeys in the early 19th century. The south-east front retains a chamfered mullioned window of three lights at ground floor level, featuring doorways with monolithic jambs. The first floor has five flat-faced mullioned windows, each of two lights. Large quoins mark the corners of the building. The gables are coped with kneelers and there are two stacks on the ridge. A return wall on the right has a two-light chamfered mullioned window with another above, situated at a mezzanine level where there was formerly an attic window. Another two-light flat-faced mullioned window is present on the first floor. At the rear, a doorway has a carved lintel bearing the date and initials ā€˜I S’ in relief.
