Description
Upper Shaw is a mid-17th century house constructed from large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features a three-room plan on the south front, which includes a continuous drip course over the ground floor windows. The windows are double chamfered mullioned with hollow chamfered mullions, consisting of a four-light parlour window with a three-light window above, a five-light housebody window with a three-light window above, and a three-light fire window with a two-light window above. The hoodmoulds terminate in straight returns. The doorway has a straight lintel, composite jambs, and a chamfered surround, with a three-light window and hoodmould above it. The left-hand return wall has an extruded stack, while the right-hand return wall features a four-light window with a similar window above. The rear includes a three-light window and a doorway like the front, creating a through passage, with a three-light window set between on the first floor. To the right of the door, there is a circular window with a small chamfered light above it. The rear kitchen wing projects forward and has a weathered plinth, a double chamfered mullioned window with four lights, and another with two lights, both with hoodmoulds above, along with a light opened between them. There is also a three-light window on the first floor.
Inside, the through passage features a timbered doorway with a basket arched lintel and reeded jambs. The housebody contains a bressumer beam that supports stop-chamfered spine beams. In the fire area, there is a large stone fireplace with corbels, a depressed arched lintel with a chamfered surround, and a cyma moulded shelf. The entry to the rear kitchen has a stop-chamfered surround, and the kitchen itself has a large slightly cambered bressumer beam supporting stop-chamfered spine beams. The roof is a king post design with two trusses and six 'V' struts, one of which has only an angle strut. Upper Shaw is a fine example of a yeoman clothier's house and is notable for preserving two bressumer beams.
