Description
Grindstone Circle and grindstone, located in the garden behind Number 12, is a structure that dates back to possibly the 18th century. The outer rim of the circle is made up of vertically bedded stones, while the inner circle consists of hollowed stones shaped like voussoirs. The stones rise towards the center, where there is a square hole at the junction of a cross. Between the arms of the cross, cobbles are set diagonally. This structure was originally used for grinding sand from the sandstone outcrop of the nearby Knowl Wood Delph Quarries, which provided stone for the construction of Rochdale Town Hall. It is a rare and complete survival of its kind.
