Description
The Lower Western Block attached to Carlton Mill at the north end is an engine house built in 1850 for Thomas Nicholl. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and had no roofing material at the time of the last survey in October 1985. The building has three storeys and a basement on the south side. The gabled west front features three bays, with a blocked archway on the left and boarding over an opening on the right. The windows have stone lintels, raised cills, and remnants of small-pane glazing. There is an oculus in the gable. The right return has five bays, with a door on the left side of the basement. The ground-floor windows are blocked and shorter than those above, and there is an eaves table. The building originally housed two beam engines.
