Description

Long Royd is a range of cottages located on Plain Lane in Sowerby Bridge. The building dates from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and around 1800. It is constructed of thin coursed rubble and features stone slate roofs. The later range is two storeys high and has four first-floor windows, while the earlier two-storey cell at the north-west end includes a northern outshut.

On the north front, the outshut of the earlier cell projects forward on the right and has quoins. It features a four-light flat-faced mullion window with a timber lintel and a large corniced stack at the right end. The left-hand range has quoins at the right end, with central paired blocked doorways and two two-light windows on each side on both floors. The right-hand ground-floor window has been replaced by a cart entrance with a girder lintel. The openings have plain stone surrounds, with doors that include tie-stones and windows that feature flat-faced mullions, each with a four-pane sash and a fixed four-pane window. There is a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping at the right gable, along with two rebuilt ridge stacks.

At the rear, the north-west cell has a later doorway on the right. The right-hand range remains as previously described, but the doorways lack tie-stones, and there is a third doorway at the left end, with windows to its right on the ground floor partly blocked. The building is currently unoccupied and in a state of dereliction.
