Description

The former New Inn is a mid-18th century public house situated on Rochdale Road, Ripponden. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar quoins, and has a slate roof. The building is double-pile, with two parallel roofs.

The south front has three bays, each featuring two-light sash windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills. A modern gabled porch was added around 1980, set between the first two bays. The original entrance is located between bays two and three, consisting of monolithic jambs with an overlapping lintel. Above this blocked entrance is a stone sundial with an arched head, finely engraved with “G J F/ Ab hoc Momento pendet Aeternitas/ Latitude - 53, 45. 1764”. Stone gutter brackets are present. The right hand return wall has a gable stack.

The rear range also has a double-pile construction. A wide Venetian window with raised impost, sill and dropped keystone is visible on each floor. Quoins are present. Two other stacks are found on the front range.
