Description
The Church of St Andrew was originally built as an Independent Chapel in 1755 and later enlarged and altered with the addition of a tower designed by Charles Child in 1840 when it became part of the Church of England. The building is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings. The original chapel, which now serves as the main body of the church, consists of four plain bays and was extended in 1840 to include a chancel that matches the original structure. It features a stone slate roof with block brackets at the eaves.
The church has simple round-headed windows set in squared ashlar surrounds, and there is an ashlar sundial from 1826 on the east side. The west tower porch is two storeys tall and includes a round-arched doorway with a window above, framed by quoin pilasters and a cornice. The belfry above has a noticeable batter with chamfered corners, arched bell openings that are louvred in stone, a moulded cornice, and a crowning stone cupola-dome.
Flanking the tower porch are single-storey wings that feature the same window style as the side elevations and a moulded eaves cornice. The east wing extends further and has a pediment gable with a triple group of archivolt arched lights facing east above a doorway, which is adorned with a cornice on console brackets and an archivolt arched fanlight above it.
