Description
The Barn House, attached to the east wing of Brearley Hall, dates from 1897 and was originally used as a billiard hall and bachelor accommodation for Brearley Hall. It now serves as a separate residence. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof, making it a notable example of the Vernacular Revival style.
The east front is divided into three sections, each topped with separate coped gables that have kneelers and finials, and a pierced quatrefoil at the apex. It is two storeys high. The first section has a semi-circular arched entrance leading to the rear courtyard, with a moulded impost and a two-light window above on the first floor. This part may be older than the rest of the building. The second and third sections each contain two cells with four-light double chamfered mullioned windows and hoodmoulds on both floors. The ground floor label stops are engraved with "C S" and "1 8 9 7".
The second section features a depressed Tudor arched doorway with a moulded surround and hoodmould. The right-hand return wall includes a five-light window with a four-light window above on the first floor, topped by a coped gable with a quatrefoil at the apex. Attached to the right end is a barn that runs at right angles to the house. It has a semi-circular arched cart entry with an inner doorway set within a portal of aisle, a two-light chamfered mullioned window, arrow slit ventilators, a mistal doorway, and stone gutter brackets. The interior of the billiard hall contains stained glass panels depicting various sports.
