Description
Knoll Top Farmhouse is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with a mid-19th century addition. The original 17th-century section is built from thin rubble stone and features large, rough-dressed quoins, while the 19th-century part is constructed of hammer-dressed stone. Both sections have a stone slate roof and are two storeys high.
The 17th-century house has double chamfered mullioned windows with two lights on the ground floor facing northeast, and similar windows with two lights above. The doorway has a heavy lintel and a chamfered surround. On the southwest facade, there is a four-light double chamfered mullioned window, along with a single chamfered light and another two-light window on the first floor. There is a similar doorway at the rear, which leads to a through passage. The gable is coped.
It appears that the house was originally more than one cell, but the 19th-century addition has obscured this, except for a fireplace that remains inside the rear room of the double-pile section. This fireplace features corbelled jambs, a chamfered surround, and a decorated lintel inscribed with "A S F." The 19th-century addition is a storey taller than the original building and has windows with projecting sills. There are four chimney stacks in total. Attached to the northwest gable is a single-storey outbuilding from the late 18th century, which includes a three-light flat-faced mullioned window on the south side.
