Description
Lock 34, also known as Warland Lower Lock, and its attached footbridge were built in 1798 as part of the Rochdale Canal. The lock features massive stone retaining walls and cappings, with rebates designed for gates, and is equipped for a double set of bottom gates. At the western end of the lock, there is a single span stone footbridge that has a segmental arch and a parapet with curved splayed sides leading down to the southern end, while the northern end has a squared pillar. This structure is illustrated in M. Johnston & C. Whitehead's book, "Turnpikes and Canals."
