Description
The nail-maker's workshop, now an outbuilding, dates from the early 19th century. It is a single-storey, single-cell structure with a gable front. The doorway features tie-stone jambs, with the left jamb forming quoins, and there is a rectangular window to the right in a punch-dressed stone surround. The left-hand return wall has a similar window, both of which have altered glazing. The interior remains intact with tools and equipment that are now housed in Cliff Castle, Keighley. Silsden was known for its nail-making industry, which peaked in 1850 as a domestic craft before declining with the advent of mass production, ultimately ceasing in the area in 1919. This small building is a significant remnant of Silsden Parish's principal craft and is the only workshop in the region that can be identified as such.
