Description

SE04NW SILSDEN C.P. SKIPTON ROAD (north side, off)

3/174 Nail-maker's workshop 5m south of High Cross Moor Farmhouse

GV II

Nail-maker's workshop, now outbuilding. Early C19. Single-storey, single-cell. Gable front: doorway with tie-stone jambs, those to left forming quoins, with rectangular window to right in punch-dressed stone surround. Left-hand return wall has similar window, both with altered glazing. The interior is preserved complete with tools and equipment in Cliff Castle, Keighley (q.v.). Silsden was famous for its nail-making industry which reached its peak in 1850, when it was a purely domestic industry. Mass-production methods superseded, and therefore the industry finally ceased in the area in 1919. This small building is therefore an important survival of the principal craft of Silsden Parish and the only workshop in the region that can be so identified.
