Description

Raikes Head Farmhouse is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century, with 18th and 19th century additions at each end. It is constructed of thin coursed rubble with dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a two-cell direct end-entry plan. The main entrance has a doorway with composite jambs and a deep lintel that has a broad chamfered surround.

There are two double-chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor; one has five lights and the other has four lights, both under a single hoodmould with straight returns. On the first floor, there is a double-chamfered mullioned window with almost square reveals, consisting of one two-light window (which lacks mullions) and two three-light windows. The gables are coped with kneelers on the left side, and there is a single stack at the ridge.

At the rear, there are two chamfered mullioned windows with two lights each, as well as two single-chamfered lights, both of which are blocked. Attached to the left side of the farmhouse is a single-cell addition with a doorway featuring composite jambs and a gable stack. On the right side, there is a two-cell 19th century cottage with a central doorway that has monolithic jambs and four-panel sashed windows on either side, along with gable stacks. The right return of the cottage has a first-floor doorway that is accessed by a flight of stone steps leading to a former wool-comber's workshop.

Inside, the house features a baffle-entry and has stop-chamfered spine beams and floor joists. The parlour contains a large single spine beam with a broad chamfer.
