Description
Nos 34, 34A, and 36 on Darley Street is a corner site with Duke Street. Originally built in 1827 as a 2-storey house for the Bradford Dispensary, it was enlarged by one storey in 1905 for the Literary Society. The building features a symmetrical sandstone "brick" front with ashlar dressings and five windows. The first floor sill course and moulded cornice are original to the 1827 construction. The 1905 top storey includes a frieze, cornice, and a balustraded parapet with a pedimented shallow centre break. Modern shop fronts flank a tall round arched entrance, which has horizontal grooved facing carried into the reveals and is contained by a half round frame. The entrance features a panelled door and a radial glazed fanlight. The upper floors have architrave surrounds to the windows, with a central tripartite window on the 1905 floor. The cornices and sill courses return to the long Duke Street elevation, mostly from 1905. The interior was refurbished for the Library in 1905.
