Description
Nos 9, 11, and 15 Duke Street is a large wool warehouse built around 1820-1830, which includes accommodation above. It is an unusual survival featuring slight Greek Revival details. The building is four storeys high in part, with a semi-basement on the right due to the slope of the site. The exterior is constructed of dressed sandstone "bricks" with ashlar doorways and an ashlar ground floor. The front is symmetrical with nine bays, showing slight end breaks with two windows and a central projection. The ground floor has horizontal grooving, and the centerpiece features finely rusticated stonework with a two-storey segmental arched carriageway, where the rustication is struck into the arch. There are later flanking doorways. Above the first floor, two pairs of giant Tuscan pilasters support a deep frieze and pediment that is set against the parapet. The cornice and parapet extend over the end breaks with flanking dies. The central bay has paired pilastered windows with panels between the floors, while the other windows are shallow revealed sashes, some of which have been altered on the right-hand side. There is an early 20th-century doorway to No 19, and a shop front has been inserted at the corner, with the cornice returning to a plain finish at the front.
