Description

The substantial corner building at 43 and 45 Darley Street, which also incorporates No. 133 Godwin Street, was constructed between 1875 and 1876 and designed by the architect T.H. Healy. It is a large, four-storey structure built of ashlar stone, displaying high-quality masonry and elaborate Italianate detailing. The corner is bevelled, with vermiculated stone banding to the ground and first floors. The second-floor windows are round-headed, each set within a tripartite grouping and topped with a dentil cornice. Large console brackets support a deeply moulded eaves cornice, and segmental pediments sit above the third-floor windows against a balustraded parapet. The ground floor retains large, heavily carved pediments on console brackets, marking the positions of former doorways. The building occupies an important corner site.
