Description

Numbers 212 and 214, along with a barn on the east side, were formerly known as High Fernley Farm. This property was rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century as two cottages from a former farmhouse. The barn and mistal, which form the east wing, date back to the 17th or 18th century. The buildings feature sandstone "brick" elevations topped with stone slate roofs. Most windows are in squared frames and have late 19th century or modern glazing. The doorways are squared jambs. The barn is constructed from roughly coursed gritstone and includes a western outshut likely used for an aisle. It has a stone slate roof with a saddlestone on the south gable end, prominent kneelers, and a crowning finial. There are two wagon portals; one has a segmental arch, while the other is chamfered and supported by massive kneller corbels that once held a midstorey hood. The mistal was originally the house, and above its doorway is an inscription reading R over W H and the date 1696, which refers to the Richardson family of Bierley Hall.
