Description
High Fernley House, formerly known as High Fernley Hall, dates back to 1698 and features an unusually symmetrical elevation for its time. Built by the Richardsons of Bierley, the house has two storeys with a front made of coursed sandstone and a coped parapet. It is topped with a stone slate roof that has flanking chimneys and coped gable ends.
On the first floor, there are two pairs of sash windows that sit under common drip moulds, which were likely originally multi-light mullioned windows. The left side of the ground floor retains a large chamfered mullioned window with nine transomed lights under a drip mould, while paired windows similar to those on the first floor are located to the right. The central entrance features a bullseye window above and a diamond panel sundial. The doorway is adorned with moulded jambs and imposts, a semi-circular head with a keystone, and a small cornice on consoles, along with a frieze inscribed with "W R: M R 1698." The interior has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries.
