Description
Lower Slack is a long range of two houses and farm buildings, now all used as dwellings, dating to the late 17th and early 18th centuries with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of coursed stone with stone slate roofs.
The house on the left is taller than the rest of the range and has one first-floor window. It features quoins. A 20th-century boarded door is set within a chamfered, quoined surround with a deep, chamfered lintel. To the left of this is a two-light, double-chamfered mullion window. Above, a six-light window with a flat-faced king mullion has renewed lintels and mullions. An 18th-century ridge stack sits to the left. The rear of this part of the building has double-chamfered mullion windows, of three lights to the ground floor and two lights above, which have been much repaired. A single-pitch addition to the left, likely formerly a wash-house, has a small single-light window.
To the right of the house is a barn, now incorporated into the dwelling. It is of a similar build but lower in height. A 20th-century double door is set under a deep stone lintel with herring-bone tooling. To the left of this door is a 20th-century window with a flush stone cill and lintel; to the right are two 20th-century windows with stone lintels and projecting cills. The rear of the barn has a quoined threshing door, now a 20th-century three-light mullion window.
A cottage is located to the right of the barn and is of similar build to the rear. It has two first-floor windows. Two 20th-century boarded doors are set within plain stone surrounds, one to the left and one centrally placed. Double-chamfered mullion windows are found throughout, with three lights to the right of the left door, six lights with a king mullion to the right of the central door, three lights above to the left, and six lights above to the right. 20th-century stacks are located at the left end and to the ridge at the right end. The rear of this section has a two-light window to the cellar, ground floor, and first floor, with some mullions removed.
A farm building, now a dwelling, forms the right end of the range. It's a lower addition to the range and has two storeys and one first-floor window. A 20th-century boarded door is set in a quoined surround. Above is a 20th-century window in a plain stone surround. The right return has a 20th-century boarded door under a stone lintel and a blocked, two-light, double-chamfered mullion window.
