Description
Ponden Cotton Mill, now functioning as a shop and café, was built in 1791, with the attached chimney added around 1825. The structure is made of coursed millstone grit and features a stone slate roof. It has three storeys and nine windows, which contain 20th-century casements with stone lintels and projecting sills. There is a door on the right side with a plain stone surround. At the rear, there is a round stone chimney approximately 40 feet high. C19 additions are present on both the left and right sides, with the right addition being lower and partially obscuring the taking-in door on the right gable of the main block. The chimney was installed when the mill transitioned from water to steam power. This mill is one of the earliest cotton mills in Yorkshire and is likely the best-preserved early example remaining today.
