Description
Hardwick House Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the 17th century and early 19th century. They are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and have stone slate roofs. The farmhouse, built in the early 19th century, is two storeys high and features two first-floor windows. There is a central doorway with monolithic jambs, flanked by four-paned sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. The gables are coped with kneelers and stacks.
The barn, located to the right of the farmhouse, has a lower roofline. It features a 17th-century doorway with composite jambs and a deep lintel that has a broad stop-chamfered surround. The barn porch projects forward and includes an added aisle with a tall doorway that has a monolithic lintel and timber joints for a har-hung door. There is another 17th-century doorway, likely re-used, leading to the mistal at the right-hand end. The rear of the barn has a 17th-century doorway opposite the cart entry, and there is a break in the stonework suggesting that the original 17th-century house may have been a single storey that was raised and extended in the early 19th century.
