Description

Lower Gate Croft is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations around 1745, as indicated by a date on the door jamb. It is constructed of rubble brought to course, with dressed quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The house is two storeys high and has four windows on the first floor. The original doorway features composite jambs and a Tudor-arched lintel with a stop-chamfered surround and sunken spandrels. To the left of the door is a late 19th-century sash window, with a similar window above it on the first floor. A central doorway, with monolithic jambs, is set between five-light double-chamfered mullioned windows, which have almost square reveals and lowered sills; these windows are missing two mullions. The first floor has three chamfered mullioned windows with lintels dating from around 1743, when the roof and windows were raised, two of three lights and one of four lights. The left bay has a lower roofline than the rest of the house, featuring gable stacks. An outshut to the rear has a lean-to roof and chamfered mullioned windows, including a single-light and a two-light window. The left-hand return wall has a plinth and a blocked doorway with a punch-dressed lintel to the left of a two-light chamfered mullioned window (one light blocked). There is a similar, blind window above. Inside, the housebody contains an 18th-century segmental-arched fireplace with finely-jointed, joggled voussoirs and a large keystone, raised jambs, and a chamfered surround. A beehive oven is set within it on the right-hand side.
