Description
The steps, gatepiers, gates, and railings located to the east of Church St Michael and All Angels were built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed from millstone grit ashlar, with cast and wrought iron elements. A flight of seven steps leads up to the main gate, which has a narrow gate on the right and a kissing-gate on the left, all flanked by railings. The steps are bordered by low, coped walls.
There are three gatepiers made of channeled, rusticated stone, each with plinths, ogee-shaped capstones, and fir-cone-shaped finials. The lower pier on the left is a plain block with a plinth, cornice, and ogee-shaped capstone. The main gates feature square section bars, with spear finials on the lower bars and curved bracing rails in the upper section. Above the main gates is a round-arched overthrow adorned with scrolled and spear-finialled bars. The gate on the right is lower and narrower, designed in a similar style, while the gate on the left has plain bars and rails. The railings on both sides have spear-finialled bars and urn finials on the standards.
