Description
The Black Bull Hotel and attached water trough is an inn dating from the early 19th century, constructed from millstone grit ashlar with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features three bays. A later gabled porch is located in the center, which includes a 20th-century panelled door with an overlight set within a doorcase that has pilasters and a cornice. On both the left and right sides of the building, there are 16-pane sash windows on each floor, with a smaller 12-pane sash window above the door. All windows have plain stone surrounds with projecting cills. The roof has shaped gutter brackets and a central stack. The left side of the building features a round-headed staircase window. Attached to the base of the wall to the left of the porch is a stone water trough, which is hollowed out of a single boulder. This location is reputedly associated with Branwell Bronte.
