Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Street in Keighley. The base of the tower likely dates from the 16th century, while the upper part was constructed in the 18th century. The remainder of the church was rebuilt in 1879 in a style reminiscent of the late 13th and early 14th centuries by architects T H and F Healey. The church is built of coursed, dressed millstone grit and features a graduated Westmorland slate roof.

The structure includes an aisled nave with a south-west tower and a south porch, as well as a chancel with a southern chapel and a north organ chamber. The nave consists of six bays. The embattled Perpendicular tower at the west end has stepped diagonal buttresses at its base, two original blocks adorned with shields on the south wall, an original hoodmould over the west window, and crocketed finials. The porch features a double-chamfered, pointed-arch doorway with a hoodmould and diagonal buttresses. The aisles have 4- and 3-light flat-arched windows, while the clerestory is fitted with 2-light pointed-arch windows. The lower three-bay chancel has a five-light east window flanked by two figures of saints, with kneelers, ashlar coping, and gable crosses.

Inside, the church has a pointed-arch arcade supported by octagonal piers, a marble pulpit, and altar rails designed in an elaborate late 13th to early 14th century style. Notably, John Wesley preached frequently in the church during the 18th century, and Patrick Bronte served as the incumbent from 1820 to 1861.
