Description
The Bradford War Memorial is located on a raised oval platform at the junction of Prince’s Way and Morley Street, in front of the Grade II-listed statue of Queen Victoria. The memorial features a tapering panelled pylon made of Bolton Wood stone, topped with a sarcophagus. The pylon is set on a stepped base with semi-circular ends that support bronze figures of a soldier on the left and a sailor on the right, both advancing with fixed bayonets, although the blades have been removed.
On the front and rear of the pylon, there are carved plain Latin crosses whose downward tapering shafts transform into sheathed swords as they pass through wreaths. The front wreath encloses a scroll inscribed with "PRO/ PATRIA/ MORI," while the rear wreath contains the city arms. Winged wreaths enclosing "RAF" are located on the sides where the pylon meets the sarcophagus, which is clasped at the front and rear by cross heads.
A bronze plaque marks the position of the original inscription that commemorates the dead of both World Wars. The dedicatory inscription reads: "TO THE IMMORTAL HONOUR OF/ THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE/ CITY OF BRADFORD/ WHO SERVED THEIR KING AND EMPIRE/ 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945/ AND IN OTHER CONFLICT/ IN PROUD AND/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE." Below this, on the front face of the base, is the incised phrase "THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE."
The memorial is set on a paved platform in front of a low curved screen wall with terminal blocks that are decorated with wreathed swords. Curved steps with terminal blocks provide the approach in front, while straight steps to the right rise from Morley Street. The two front-facing blocks feature small bronze plaques.
