Description

Burley House is a small mansion dating from the later 18th century, now operating as a hotel. It is set back from Bradford Road in Burley in Wharfedale and stands freely with its outbuildings. The house is two storeys high and features an ashlar-fronted exterior. A hipped roof is hidden behind a parapet, which is ornamented with urns on the corners. Sash windows with glazing bars are a prominent feature. A string course runs below the sills of the lower windows, with two further string courses delineating the floors. A cornice tops the building.

The east front is symmetrical, with five windows, the central three of which slightly project under a modillioned pediment, topped with a finial and containing an oval window. Inset balustrading runs between the string courses beneath the upper windows. The central arched doorway has a fanlight and is set within a small classical surround. The south front also has five windows, with a central two-storey canted bay. The north front features a Venetian window within an arch, which illuminates the staircase. A narrower two-storey extension is attached to the west side of the building, left of the south front.

The interior exhibits finely moulded decoration in the style of Adam, visible in the doorcases and friezes. The staircase opening is framed by a pair of columns, and the stair window has elaborate decoration, including an intricate wooden balustrade where every third baluster is spiral. A main room behind the bay window incorporates richly decorated apses in the canted sides of the inner end. A former fireplace, formerly inlaid with marble, has been removed.
