Description
Nos. 1-11 Manor Row, which includes No. 4 Duke Street, are former wool warehouses and office chambers built around 1880. The buildings are constructed of dressed sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings and feature slate roofs. They stand five stories tall with a nine-window arrangement on the front. The ground floor is slightly battered and heavily rusticated, topped with a bracket cornice. There are cill bands on the upper floors and a projecting moulded eaves cornice. The ground floor has segment-headed windows, while the upper floors have flat-headed windows.
On the east front facing Manor Row, there are 18 windows in total, arranged with a central loading entrance that has a pilastered ashlar surround. This entrance is flanked by single segment-headed doorways with moulded surrounds, with three windows to the left and two windows, a doorway, and a single window to the right. The left section features another loading entrance with a pilastered ashlar surround, flanked by single windows and shop windows, with two doorways and two windows to the left. The canted corner has a single window on each floor.
The south front facing Duke Street has nine windows and features an off-centre segmental loading archway with a rusticated surround. There are three windows to the right and a doorway with a moulded ashlar surround, along with three windows to the left. This group of late Victorian wool warehouses and offices is architecturally impressive and significant.
