Description
The County Court, built in 1859 and designed by Mr R C Reeves, the County Court Surveyor, is a small but detailed example of Italianate architecture. The six-bay front is set back behind a carriage sweep. The building is two storeys high with an attic. It is constructed of dressed sandstone, with an ashlar plinth to the rusticated ground floor. The ground-floor windows and flanking doors are set within a shallow applied arcade, featuring vermiculated quoin surrounds and voussoirs, with masque keystones to the windows. Flights of steps lead to the doorways, with the left-hand bay, containing the main entrance, slightly wider and with a slight projection. The main entrance features double panelled doors with a semi-circular fanlight above. A moulded sill course runs along the first floor, above which the round-headed windows are set within eared architrave surrounds and keystones. Above the first-floor window over the main entrance are the Royal Arms. A moulded string course is positioned beneath the frieze, which contains narrow rectangular attic lights between fluted console brackets supporting a projecting eaves cornice. Moulded cornice chimneys rise above the roofline.
