Description
The Harden War Memorial is a First World War memorial, unveiled in 1920, with names and dates from the Second World War added later. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and millstone grit and features a wayside cross design.
The memorial is situated to the east of St Saviour's Church on a prominent corner site at the junction of Harden Road, Wilsden Road, and Keighley Road, on raised ground. It stands on a stone-flagged platform that is accessed by a central flight of three steps, flanked by sandstone ashlar gate piers topped with flat pyramidal caps. The original ball finials seen in historic photographs have been removed. High ramped walls made of coursed millstone grit blocks with segmental copings surround the memorial. A low, stepped millstone grit retaining wall serves as the backdrop to the memorial and platform.
The memorial features a shaped hexagonal base topped by a Tuscan column and a cross. The front face of the base is inscribed with the word 'REMEMBER', with '1914' on the left side and '1919' on the right. The rear three faces are inscribed with '1939 - 1945'. The memorial is set on a two-stepped hexagonal plinth, with the top step displaying the names of the Fallen. The 21 names of those who died during the First World War are arranged in alphabetical order on the three front faces, while the 13 names of those who died during the Second World War are located on the three rear faces of the plinth.
