Description

Ivy House Farmhouse is a house dated "S S 1676," attributed to Samuel Sunderland of Hill End Farmhouse. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof and features two storeys. The building has a two-cell gable-entry plan and a double-depth layout, with a plinth.

The windows are all double-chamfered mullioned types, with the first-floor windows having almost square reveals. The first cell includes a 5-light window with a 4-light window above that lacks mullions. The second cell features a 6-light window with a king-mullion, a 4-light window above, and a 2-light fire-window with a single arch-headed light above. The gables are coped with kneelers and ridge stacks. The rear of the house has four ground-floor windows: two with 2 lights flanked by 3-light windows. The first floor has two 3-light windows, one of which lacks mullions.

On the right-hand side, there is a gabled mid-20th century porch that protects the original doorway, which has a square head, composite jambs, and a stop-chamfered surround. The lintel of the doorway bears the date inscription in high relief.

Inside, the house features a large bressumer supported by a chamfered heck-post with carved decoration, thought to be a charm against witchcraft and sometimes referred to as a witch-post. The heck-screen is made of board and muntin-panelling, and there are large crudely dressed spine beams with broad chamfer.
