Description
The Malt Shovel Inn is a public house located on Wilsden Road in Harden, dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a single-storey rear aisle or outshut, following a two-cell gable-entry plan that is double-depth.
The inn showcases double-chamfered mullioned windows, with those on the ground floor featuring a continuous hoodmould that extends around the left gable. The first cell, or housebody, includes a two-light fire-window and a five-light window, with an additional two-light window inserted between them. On the first floor, there are a two-light and a five-light window, although some mullions are missing. The second cell also has a five-light window with a similar one above it. A later added cell on the right side maintains the original style, reusing quoins on the right gable, which lacks coping. The left gable is coped with kneelers and has a stack, while there is another stack at the ridge and a late 20th-century stack positioned in front of the ridge at the right-hand end. The rear of the building features an original two-light window along with other inserted windows that match the original style. The left-hand return wall is rendered and includes a doorway with monolithic jambs.
Inside, the inn has stop-chamfered spine beams, one of which in the housebody is made from a roughly-dressed tree with a forked branch. The rear room contains a segmental-arched fireplace with a stop-chamfered surround and a visible oak post from the timbered arcade. The front of the inn displays a circular plaque indicating that it has been designated as a "Tetley Heritage Inn." The building is prominently located next to Harden Beck Bridge.
