Description
The house at Wood Bank dates to 1635, with an additional cottage likely added in the early 18th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone for the main house, with hammer-dressed stone for the cottage, and has stone slate roofs. The house is a 2-cell gable-entry double-depth plan with 2 gabled wings to the rear. It has two storeys and three first-floor windows facing the front. Features include a plinth and a cavetto-moulded string course. Most of the windows are double-chamfered mullioned-and-transomed; the first cell has a 6-light window with a king-mullion and a 6-light window above. The second cell has an 8-light window with a king-mullion, and a 3-light fire-window with a 4-light window and small arched light above. A 4-light window is centrally placed above the first floor. The gables have kneelers and ridge stacks. At the rear, a central bay has two double-chamfered mullioned windows – one of 2 lights, the other of 3 lights, set at different levels to the first floor, likely to illuminate the stair. A later lean-to extension fills the gap between the wings and includes a 5-light window. The gabled wings also have kneelers, coping, and stacks. A doorway on the right-hand return has a basket-arched lintel bearing a carved date inscription in high relief, with composite jambs and a moulded surround (cyma, step, roll, step). Carved consoles decorated with lunettes and arrowheads support the dripmould on either side of the lintel. Altered windows are in keeping with the original style, with one original window of 4 lights to the first floor. The interior appears to have been largely altered in the mid-20th century.
