Description

A terrace of five executive or overlookers' houses, and one shop, was completed by 1868 as part of the Saltaire model village. Designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt, the buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The terrace is two storeys high, with each house originally comprising two bays. Number 1 is set back, while numbers 2 and 5 project forward slightly and have gabled fronts. The windows and doorways feature archivolted round-arched detailing, complemented by square-headed first-floor windows set on a sill band. Number 5 has a large two-light shop window on the ground floor and a triple-light window with round-arched lights above. Number 2 incorporates paired round-arched lights to the first floor and a side entrance in an altered window opening. Number 1 features a three-light canted bay window on the ground floor, a later inserted doorway, and paired round-arched windows on the first floor. The buildings are included on the list for their group value, contributing to the character of the wider Saltaire estate.
