Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a church built in 1849 by Ignatius Bonomi and Cory. It is constructed from coursed dressed millstone grit and features a stone slate roof, showcasing a Romanesque style. The building includes a west tower, a nave with a north aisle, a south porch, and a chancel.
The tower has two stages and is accentuated with quoins. It features a quoined stair tower with slit windows and a window on the first stage. The second stage has a louvre window with two round-headed lights and a colonette. The tower is topped with a projecting parapet and ashlar coping. The nave consists of four bays, with a door located in a pent porch at the second bay. The chancel has three bays and is lower than the nave, with the east end featuring three windows, the central one being taller. The nave and chancel are adorned with shaped kneelers, ashlar coping, and gable crosses.
Inside, there is a round-arched arcade supported by low, round piers that have cushion capitals.
