Description

These four houses, numbered 81, 83, 85, and 87, stand on the south side of Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale. They likely date from around 1840. The houses are constructed of well-dressed, coursed stone, and have irregular chimneys rising from a roof covered with stone slabs. The front of the building projects significantly beyond the adjacent houses to the left. There are four sash windows on each floor, with glazing bars, stone surrounds, and sills featuring moulded block brackets. Quoined corners and gutter blocks are also present. The houses originally had shopfronts, with strips of quoins marking each house and central doorways. The original glazing bars remain, and arched heads are visible to the left of the doorway at number 85. Nos. 71 to 87 on the odd numbers of Main Street are grouped together.
