Description
These are a group of cottages, originally a house, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. They are constructed of finely dressed gritstone with a stone slate roof. The building was originally designed with a three-room plan, arranged as a double-depth layout with a central lobby entrance. It has two storeys and eight bays, with seven windows on the first floor. The front features a plinth and a decorative band around the building. Doorways are located in the third and eighth bays, having monolithic jambs and chamfered surrounds rising to create the impression of false ogee lintels. A circular "bullseye" window sits above the doorway in the third bay. The remaining bays have cross-windows with double-chamfered surrounds. The gables are coped with kneelers. Two prominent, corniced ridge stacks are visible. The rear elevation has three 19th-century doorways, also with monolithic jambs and double-chamfered mullioned windows. Three cross-windows are present on the ground floor, with a further cross-window providing light to the mezzanine-level staircase. The first floor has three four-light windows. Two stacks are situated against the ridge.
Inside, the westernmost room, on the left of the building, contains a fine fireplace with a segmental arch, skewbacks, and a cyma-moulded surround.
