Description

The Cullingworth War Memorial was erected in 1924 to commemorate the First World War, with later additions to record those lost in the Second World War. It is situated in the centre of the village, within a sub-rectangular memorial garden.

The memorial is constructed from ashlar limestone and stands on a rectangular brick dais, creating a raised terrace due to the sloping ground to the northeast, which is approached by a flight of steps. The monument itself is a slightly tapering, classical-style stone shaft, featuring an architrave, a frieze with a dentil band, and a projecting moulded cornice supported by plain mutules. It rises from a two-stepped base with stone wreath rests against the square plinth. The west elevation displays a carved laurel wreath flanked by flags lowered in salute. Rectangular stone tablets are set within recessed moulded frames on each elevation of the shaft; the west tablet bears an incised dedication reading "ERECTED / IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF / CULLINGWORTH / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR / COUNTRY / 1914 – 1918 / AFTER WAR PEACE,” alongside the names of 47 individuals who died in the First World War. The names of the nine individuals who died in the Second World War have been added to the east tablet, under the inscription “THE / SECOND GREAT WAR / 1939 - 1945."

The main entrance to the garden features ashlar steps, flanked by substantial, classical-style rectangular gate piers that echo the memorial's design. Subsidiary open gateways, flanked by conical ashlar posts, are located at the northeast and southeast corners of the garden, providing access to paths defined by raised kerb stones on brick, with staggered seating areas. Dwarf walls with coping stones enclose the garden. Railings, carried by decorative cast-iron posts and conical ashlar posts, run along the north, west and south sides, while the eastern boundary is marked by a hedge against the inner face of the dwarf wall.
