Description

No. 5 Station Road is a mid-17th century house that was originally a single-storey cottage but was raised to two storeys in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from large coursed grit-stone and features a stone slate roof. The layout follows a two-cell central lobby-entry plan.

On the ground floor, there are double-chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, consisting of two lights and five lights. In the center, there is a Tudor-arched doorway with a broad chamfered surround, and the spandrels are inscribed with "16 IL". The first floor has a two-light and a three-light window, along with an inserted bathroom window above the door. The gables are coped and include kneelers. There is a central stack and another stack positioned in front of the ridge on the right gable. The left-hand return wall features a four-light window with two single-lights above it, and the gable clearly shows the earlier roof-line.

Inside, the door opens into a lobby next to the main stack, which only heats the first cell (the housebody). The fireplace has a large arched opening that is now blocked, but its outline is still visible beneath the wallpaper. The second cell (the parlour) has a small pantry taken from it. The stairs are located along the rear wall, and beneath them, steps lead down to the cellar.
