Description

Upper Penny Hill Farmhouse, barn, and stables, situated at Penny Hill Lane End, Clayton, dates to 1772, as indicated by the initial “WB 1772”. The complex comprises a two-storey sandstone farmhouse and a barn arranged on a long house plan. The farmhouse features flush quoins and a stone slate roof with saddlestones and prominent kneelers. The front of the house has three bays, each featuring a three-light square mullion window set within squared surrounds, with modern casements now in place. A mullioned and double-transomed stair window is located at the rear. A squared jamb doorway is topped with a dated lintel. The barn has queen post and king post trusses. The stables are set at right angles to the main farmhouse block and have a partial stone slate roof, and feature two-light square mullion windows and flush quoins.
